the frottage paintings

In this series of experimental print paintings, I refined a process combining oil, UV ink and pastel to develop a new kind of frottage painting onto the surface of aluminium composite. Here, the photographic imagery appears as a dematerialized, embossed surface within the paintings. The paintings are drawing on an expressive visual language of noise, static and dissonance.

My intention is to complicate the legibility between the mechanical and the handmade, the photograph and the painting. I’m interested in Photography’s complex relationship to Painting, the breakdown of ‘truth’ in images and extending the ways in which a photograph can represent the hand of the artist.

I live and create on the unceded sovereign land of the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
